When should you use one?

Can it really help you land a job?

These are just of the questions I hear every week.

A careers test should be the starting point of your career development process. Instead of reaching for your CV, reach for your careers test instead.

Your CV will tell you where you have been but your careers test will tell you where you should be going.

Don’t run off in the wrong direction. Take the test. Stop and think for a while. Don’t repeat previous mistakes.

Some things you need to know about careers test

Well the first thing you should know is that it’s not a test. You can’t pass it or fail it. It’s not something you can swot for or prepare.

It’s an assessment, where you are the only judge. you decide what the answers are. You decide what the correct answers are.

The first career test probably appeared around the 1950’s.

Since the Internet came into play we have seen an explosion of careers tests, all designed to help you make better career choices.

Employers have been using personality tests for over fifty years to make better hiring decisions. They realised a long time ago that certain people perform better in some jobs. They realised that skills and experience was only a small part of the picture and that personality often trumped them when it came to successful employees.

When you are using a careers test you are tapping into the same powerful tools that employers have been using for years. Before an employer makes a huge investment in a new member of staff, they want to know that it’s the right decision. This is why they use personality tests. Sometimes referred to as psychometric tests.

How does a careers test work?

You will be asked to complete a series of questions pertaining to your personality. You may expect these questions to be about your qualifications or work experience or skills but this is not the case. The only thing the careers test looks at is your

Avoid square pegs and round holes

In simple terms your career test is there to help you avoid placing a square peg in a round hole. Humans are adaptable but they still have a preferred way of behaving. They have a preferred work environment – You have a preferred work environment.

Make sure you are working towards your strengths and not wrestling every day trying to master things that you have little natural aptitude for. Better to spend your time on areas where you stand a chance of excelling, where you can tap into your natural talent.

Your careers test is there to help you figure out what that could be and ensure you do what employers do and place yourself in jobs that will work out for you.
