Isn’t it better for me, if I have to supplement my income, to take a part-time job instead of a full time job which allows me to still building my business which in part includes residual income?

Otherwise if I take a full time job I am in a very vulnerable position if the job just goes away due to down-sizing, etc.

Thanks for keeping me in mind, Martin. I am probably too old to be looking for a suitable job. A former teacher described personality as a gift. In the wrong circumstances it is a liability.

We all have a “natural talent” and doing what comes naturally breeds confidence which has a positive effect on our self-esteem. And furthermore “do what you love and the money will come” states it well.

All the things I’ve seen so far are valid for young people, because when you are 45+ you CV is discarded before they’ve finished reading your name.
And, by the way in Spain the employer or recruitment agency are allowed to ask your age, marital status, home address and to request a photo.
I can not agree more that, when you have a job, more you love it more successful you are and, you achieve it with less effort and more fun.

Job thoughts are creative thoughts, about improvement and value. They appear when they need to and not always in working hours. People in successful jobs often travel anyway, and have to integrate their job into their life. Clients assume if you are unhappy you may not have sorted out your own issues so how can your work possibly help them? Thing is, joy is early, if the job is not right, settling down into it won’t happen. I am still working out how to settle into roles that ultimately are change roles and even when regarded as permanent, eventually become interim once the change has settled. So no matter how much loved, it’s a case of always looking and I think being unsettled can look like you don’t like your role.

Hi, Martin,
To be honest it’s hard to evaluate success if one doesn’t have the right set of values and principles to achieve it. For me success is closely linked to personal fulfillment, to the feeling that I managed to matter in somebody’s life. If you are successful and you’re the only one to enjoy it, then it has no importance in the long run.

All the best,
Lavinia

Good morning Martin, great to hear from you and I have just watched the two videos. In answer to the question: if you are in a job you love nothing is too much trouble, days don’t drag and the sun appears to shine constantly. Positivity is contagious, work colleagues enjoy your company, the business you are involved in does well.
At the risk of an over used adage, a colleague of mine once said of me- ‘I’ll have whatever shes on’.
Too much time is spent at work for it to be a chore, try and find elements or everything about the job that makes you smile.

Doing the job you love gives you confidence and inspires those you interact with.
With confidence comes a sense of fulfilment and achievment which generates happiness.
If you are happy and comfortable with your life problems are resolved with less anxiety and opportunities are received with greater enthusiasm.

A job that you love taps into that which you excel at.
If you excel at something your enthusiasm for it is reinforced and communicated – it is difficult to hide enthusiasm.
Finding someone who is enthusiastic and effective in their role for their client, is a wonderful thing. Success isn’t then inevitable, but it has an excellent grounding to start from.

Thanks Martin, the videos were great, got me really interested and intrigued.

My success dependent on doing a job I love because nothing else would make sense otherwise. For many people job is just not work, it is who you are most of the time, if you love what you do, then its only logical to expect success from the love that you invest. Its a love affair and you always need ‘happily ever afters’ and increased income is the best beginning …

At the same time I also agree with the question posed earlier by a few people, ‘what if your not sure what you really love’?

I’d like to know what is success to a job? Is it increase in income , or satisfaction, or motivation or nothing at all… and all you feel is that you are good at what you do and no one else agrees with you

I feel that to be successful in your job is to be happy and content, nothing will be too much trouble and you give 100% in everything. It means not waking up with that dreaded feeling of going to work. It means dealing with like minded people, it means not being preoccupied with dreaded work thoughts and concentrating on your family and friends. It means feeling positive about your life which affects everything you think, say and do.

I have always found in life that to be a success you have really know about the industry you work in and enjoy your work, but more importantly you have to be able to relate to people at all levels and treat people with respect and by doing this you earn respect from others. This makes it easier in getting the best out of people within your company and also makes it easier when dealing with potential and existing clients.. I could be successful in doing another job but not to the level if I was not as enthusiastic and passionate and in love with what I do. My job is like my second family and it needs to be fullfilling.

Work with your personality for true “work/life-success”.

Only when you love something, will you be involved in it. Involvement is the key to success and to growth. When your heart is not in something it becomes a burden, and that in turn restricts your growth, so it is simple there will be no progress whether it is in life or in increasing your bank balance.

A job you love isnt a chore if you are doing a job that suits your personality and attitude to life it becomes second nature. just looking forward to getting up and going to work refects in your whole day and considering most of us spend more time working than we do at home with our families it is important to make sure your job is right for you.

I have just been made redundant at 50 from a sales job with a large high street banking group and although I feel let down and my self confidence has taken a hit I realise to my ebarrasment the reason I have spent 20 years in this industry purely for the money, going for interviews to try and get into a simular job has made me realise that I need to try somthing else thats suits me and my family not just my bank balance.

Hi Martin. Thanks for the chance to win a free place at your workshop. I think when you do a job you love you can achieve work ‘flow’, where your personality, passions and strengths are aligned, and you’re performing at your best all the time so can achieve anything you want to.

Reply

Paul September 8, 2010 at 3:38 pm

If you are happy in your work you will carry it out effortlessly and this will reflect on your overall performance and in turn impress your clients. By contrast, if you are unhappy in your work, you will be stressed, nervous and give a negative image to your clients which will be counter-productive. My web-site shows me as a Wedding Toastmaster, which is what I enjoy doing, but in fact the recession has all but killed this aspect of my earning ability and so I am actually working full-time in the security industry which puts great pressure on my time and can be very stressful.

The “Killer” questions in any prospective interview have to be on Strengths and Weaknesses. Strengths may be evidenced through achievement, but weaknesses are a real blind spot. Hi, I think this is quite accurate, but I gladly work as part of a team as long as I have a lead role or defined area of work.

I have to admit, I was a little sceptical about this test, but reading the results, I was taken aback, it was the most accurate result I have ever seen in any of the many tests I have done.
It described my anxiousness about job interviews to a tee, it was almost creepy…

Fantastic! I have never ever got such impression on this kind of psychometric methodology which is a surprised snap of my personality. Actually, very impressive way approaching people and really appreciating this link.

And very nice of you of the attractive offer though I am not yet ready to catch it up. By the way, thank you much

Martin Gibbons has been kind to me ))). Jokes apart….I was impressed by your professional report of “career psychometric tests”. Its a eye opening report and helps People to know themselves so that they get empowerd to focus their next course of action……

This is amazing! Thank you so much! This is really helpful and really insightful. Many points you’ve mentioned are things I practice subconciously now for many years and this really showed me excatly why it is so.

Just completed the Three videos “Special Selection”.
Congratulations – Spot on – what I have been doing for years !!!!! However I still cant get past the impenetratable dimness of recruitment agents or HR departments.
This also leads me to the conclusion that it is not me to blame either.
Catch 22 – Over to you Martin!
